With regards to increasing the Surface Fleet size and strength, the RN should just build more ASW Type 26 and GP Escort Type 31 Frigates as the RN’s current projected fleet size is woefully inadequate. Any new build investment needs to be prioritised to the Future Type 83 AAW / BMD Destroyer Requirement, the Multi-Role Solid Support Ships and probably most crucially right now the Future Fleet Solid Support and Future Fleet Oiler Requirements.

All ships require updated, up fire powered, up anti drone capabilities, lots more close in defense weapons.

the Astute has a type 2076 sonar that includes some conformal arrays on the side and a bow array built into both sides of the bow structure ahead of the torpedo tubes (3 per side which is a bit strange). BAE claims is the best sonar ever.

Yes the Royal Artillery needs a new Self-propelled Bofors 40mm Anti-Aircraft Artillery System, for Light Air Defence Regiments. When the Royal Artillery gave up its old towed Bofors L70/40mm Anti Aircraft Artillery, replacing them with Towed Rapider SAM system or Blowpipe MANPAD systemstoo. The British Army lost a military capability, that had severed the British Army since the 1930's through World War Two, upto the 1970's very well. Going to an all Missile Air Defence System, was a mistake and an expensive one at that too. However, now Anti Aircraft, Anti Missile, Anti Drones Cannon systems, have so advanced, over their 1970's triple-A counterparts. The BAe System new Self-propelled 40mm Automatic Air Defence Cannon System, would be ideal for the British Army. Facing or going into the 2030 to 2050 uncertain world, between East and West, especially between Russia and Nato. Having a couple of Light Air Defence Regiments, armed with around 36 new BAe Systems Self-propelled 40mm Automatic Air Defence Cannon System. Either mounted on 36 Mann 6x6 All Terrain Truck, each with armoured crew cabs for a crew of three, plus automatic feed armoured-protected magazines with 1,000 to 1,500 round of 40mm shells per magazine carriedvon the vehicle too. So the UK Government and MoD, being brave enough to invest in buying, around 80 of these new BAe Systems new Self-propelled Automatic 40mm Cannon Air Defence Systems? Could be the real question here, as this could be another world betting Triple-A cannon system, when the Workd navies are already buying the Naval Dual-role Automatic 40mm Cannon Systems. For their Frigates, Coverts, Offshore Patrol Vessels and Assault Ships, even the Royal Navy are buying them. For their new Type 31 and Type 32 Frigates as well, so the MoD buying the army version for the Royal Artillery would be a good ideal too! Let hope the MoD civil servants and defence ministers, of the future UK Government, buys this BAe System 40mm Bofors system for the Royal Artillery next too?
